A dreamy morning!

Sunday, June 11th, 2006

Today was one of those mornings that really allow me to appreciate running.

The weather was perfect with a capitol P. Sunny, about 65 degrees, breezy…. What more could you ask for.

I hit the trail at 9:00. Lots of people out doing their thing. Runners, bikers, couples pushing strollers.

The Capital Crescent Trail above Bethesda is unfinished hard-packed gravel. I start about 3 quarters of a mile below that, in the paved area. It’s nice to get to see all the pedestrians on the paved trail. Up above the paved area it’s mainly runners and a few walkers. It’s densely “green” and makes for a great experience. Running both areas makes for a run that satisfies both the social side of me, and the nature lover.

Get out there!

Herons in the mist

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

The other day I was riding down the Capital Crescent trail toward work. It was about 6:00 in the morning. The air was brisk.

As I crossed over the C&O Canal, I could see mist rising off the water. The morning sun cast long shadows through the trees, and the streams of light through the mist was surreal.

As I looped around to where the trail parallels the Canal, I saw two enormous blue herons standing on the Canal, one about 10 feet from the other. The mist, the morning sun, the beautiful wildlife, what a day for a ride!

Something must have disturbed the birds, because a minute or two later, they were flying down the canal next to me. It was magnificent. Their huge wings lapping the water with each flap, the mist swirling behind them! Wow!

I was pushing full steam ahead when they came along side me, and silently, effortlessly they sped off, disappearing into the mist ahead.

I wish the world could see scenes like this on their morning commute…
